Professional Experience
Canadian pianist Tong Wang recently received her Bachelor of Music at the New England Conservatory in Boston with piano department chair Bruce Brubaker. Her previous teachers include Xiaopin Li, Hua Jiang, and Boris Konovalov. Tong’s awards include first prize at the Mido International Piano Competition in Paris, gold medal at the National Young Artist Competition in Beijing, third prize at the International Chopin Golden Ring Competition in Slovenia, and first prize in the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition. Tong has performed in concerts including the Young Musicians Celebration in Norwich, England, the Arts and Culture Series at the Winspear Center and the Royal Alberta Museum, the Opening and Gala Concerts for the Kiwanis and Fall Music Festivals in Canada, and the American Protégé Winners Concert at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall. In 2010, as a winner of the Canadian Music Competition, Tong performed Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Austrian conductor Maestro Alexei Kornienko. Soon after, she debuted with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra and the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear and Red Deer College Arts Center respectively, performing Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1. The past summers Tong has studied and performed at various festivals across Europe and the U.S., including Siena Music Festival and Rome Music Festival in Italy, Mendelssohn Academy in Leipzig, Germany, Holland Music Sessions in the Netherlands, Brevard Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. She has worked in masterclasses with Pavel Gililov, Jacques Rouvier, Rita Sloan, Julian Martin, Hung-Kuan Chen, Norman Krieger, Boris Berman, and Andrzej Jasinski. Tong has taught at the Point Counterpoint Chamber Music Festival in Vermont as assistant music faculty. She is a recipient of the Alberta Arts Foundation Grant, the Winspear Center and Shean Memorial Scholarships, the New England Conservatory Beneficent Scholarship Award, the New England Conservatory George Chadwick Medal, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award of Performing Arts. Tong is also interested in exploring unconventional concerts formats in projects such as the “Unconservatory” concert, a NEC inter-departmental, student-run performance which explores untraditional themes, issues, and presentational methods. In 2016, Tong and her colleague, Wesley, were awarded the Entrepreneurial Musicianship Grant to produce the creative project, “Zenkora: A Brief History”, a multi-media, interdisciplinary orchestra concert presenting the stories and facets of an original fantasy multiverse. Tong has recently been performing around Europe with Lincoln Center Stage’s resident piano quintet onboard Holland America Line. In Fall 2017, she will begin her graduate studies at the McGill University with professor Kyoko Hashimoto and will later perform the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.3 with the Red Deer Symphony and conductor Claude Lapalme in the spring season of 2018.
