Teaching & Other Details
I believe it is extremely important to constantly adapt one's teaching method to address the specific personality of the student in question, to read the student and make decisions how to proceed based on this. I often use humor and self-deprecation in order to make a student feel more comfortable and confident in themselves. I like for them to reach a point where they know they have something to say, how to say it, and that they have said it successfully. In general, I emphasize always knowing the basics of one's repertoire, such as fingering, tempos, pedalling, etc., in order to save time in the process of communicating musical intentions. In order to further a connection with repertoire, I always like the student to know something about the composer's life, and the circumstances behind a particular piece. Fundamentally, I always wish the student to be engaged with what they are doing, and to realize that music is a very vibrant, exciting discipline that can really make a difference in their and others' lives!
