Diploma in Music (Performance in Applied Music and Contemporary Bass) from Vancouver Community College. Achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.72. Received either an A or A+ Jury Award in all four semesters of study. Received the Christopher Vincent Shannon Memorial Scholarship for outstanding commitment to chosen study area (performance in Bass).
Professional Experience
Worked as a bass player in musical theatre. Worked as the bass player in the professional group “Sarah K and the Soul Collective”. Tutored Langley Fine Arts School students in their homes two to three times per week. Played bass in the VCC Latin Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Korsrud. Played bass in the VCC Classic Jazz Ensemble, directed by Craig Scott. Played bass in the New Westminster District Jazz Ensemble, a big band jazz ensemble consisting of music students and professional musicians, directed by Adam Jones. Played bass in the Crossroads United band, directed by Bruce Harding, PhD.
Teaching & Other Details
The way I teach is ensuring that the fundamentals in music (i.e. timing, technique) are sound. I begin by demonstrating the technique or concept (i.e. a proper hand position or major scale) and ask the student to emulate that. Afterwards I explain why it is important to their development to learn this technique and have them work on it for the next lesson. I believe this should be enjoyable for the student, and thus I am comfortable in teaching songs and styles that interest the student most, such as Rock, Funk, Blues, R&B, Latin Jazz, Bebop, Jazz Fusion, etc.
Availability
I have a flexible schedule and can work anytime except for Saturday night.
Preferred Teaching Place
I can teach in my home as I have a complete studio in the basement with multiple instruments, including a keyboard, a full drum set, and three guitars and bass guitars available. I also have reliable transportation and can teach in Surrey, Delta, White Rock, Langley, and Aldergrove.
